Before I started reading it, I tried to find out some facts about the book and the author, and than I realized, that Wolfang Herrndorf has unfortunately commited suicide last year at my birthday, at the age of 48... After he was diagnosed with a lethal brain tumour...
So folks I've been readin' the book...
And when I started readin' I was kinda confused, cause the first chapters are an extract of the end of the book. Normally reading a book is a laborious thing to me, cause they mostly seem very borring, annoying and always time-stretching... But "Why We Took The Car" is one of the few exceptions.
First I thought "oh my god, what the hell am I reading here?"
But after a few pages later I got into it. It was fascinating. And this fascination didn't let me go.
In course of time, I was able to put myself in the place of the 14 yr. old Maik (the narrator of the book) who's livin' a very colourless life in which boredom is the ubiquitous and predominant thing.
The story and all the funny things, which made me read this book with excitement, began when Tschik, or Andrej Tschichatschow turned in Maik's life. Tschick, was the one who took him away from his alcoholic mom and his dad, who used to be a business man, is frankly speaking a real loser.
Then his grey life turned into a life, full of adventure, fun and craziness. It made me wanna live this stories... It made me wanna drive through some countries with a freakin' old Lada... It made me wanna forget the daily stress we got in school... But why did it make me dream of this?
(For everyone who doesn't know what a "Lada" looks like :-P)
I think every little child has even once dreamt of a life, where you are really free. Free of all duties. Beeing allowed to do whatever u wanna do and what law lets u do. Freedom in his purest form. Go on an adventure, u never even thought u would go on.
It really describes perfectly how u gather life experience. But in the end, like in nearly every beautiful story, all of a sudden the reality smashes in and destroys the beautiful illusion of adventure and freedom. But thats life, it ends whenever it is the nicest! (ha-ha)
All those crazy stories of these two boys made me suck this book in like a sponge.
Everyone who is seeking a book which is about freedom and adventure, I can recommend u this fantastic book. It's never getting boring. So convince urself of it!
And to y'all MERRY X-MAS and enjoy ur vacation maybe u're goin' on adventure! ;-)
